Two years after the pet food recall federal investigators admits that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did not do its job properly.

What’s more, FDA lacks the statutory authority to impose recalls and penalize companies for recall violations — a lack of power that worked against the agency in 2007, as officials attempted to crack down on melamine-laced pet food products now linked to the deaths and illnesses of thousands of dogs and cats.
The assessment comes from the Office of Inspector General’s (OIG) audit of FDA’s role in the 2007 pet food recall, a scandal that involved 60-million containers of pet food in the United States, most manufactured by Menu Foods Limited and sold under 95 brand names. The report, requested by Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin, chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, makes a series of recommendations for strengthening FDA’s recall authority and improving its effectiveness in monitoring food recalls.

Now I think in all fairness to Menu Foods the entire recall problem was not theirs.. Yes they were the manufactures of those 60-million containers of pet food but they follow if you will a recipe from those foods sold under 95 brand names. When you use cheap ingredients and products to cut cost or to increase the protein level you are asking for trouble. And in fairness to them no one can find a contaminated ingredient in a product if they don’t know that it exists. No machine exists that can take something like rice flour and test it for every thing bad.

Should you dress your pets in Halloween Costumes? Do you think it is a good or bad idea?
Everyone has their opinion on this not that I am a big lover of dressing pets in costumes. That are lots of events that sponsor Halloween contest and make money for animal shelters and rescue groups which is a good thing.
Of course dressing up your dog or cat in a pet costume is a matter of choice. There are many types of costumes to choose from the new 2009 Zelda cave dog costume seems to be the rage, Pugs and Bull dogs really look cute in them.
Lets face we all have one time or the other put some type of clothing on our pets and had a good laugh at their expense. Even those who have said they would never put costumes on their dog or cat. But you know what there are people that put outfits on their pets everyday and to those I say…What’s up with that…lol
An occasional outfit or costume now and then is one thing but everyday I think is a little over board. Of course that is just my opinion.
So if you are one that dresses up your pet in Halloween costumes, other occasions or even everyday my hat off to you. Have you start looking for costumes for your kids or maybe even adult costumes for yourself. If so you might want to think about your pets, after all your pet likes to have fun and be apart of the family too! Time is running out!
