Dogs and Cats with Cancer

As pets are living longer and healthier lives, we are seeing more dogs and cats with cancer just like in people. Dogs and cats all get many different types of cancer. Some kinds of cancer are curable, some are treatable. Pet owners can only provide comfort and loving care.

Whether a certain treatment or therapy is appropriate for your pet depends on:

1) The type of cancer (based on biopsy or cytology)
2) The stage (how aggressive or fast-moving it is)
3) The location

Learn what kind of cancer your dog has, how it spreads, how it is treated and what is the survival rate. Start by going to your veterinarian for facts and advice. Then do your homework by going to library, go online this is a great resource you can find support groups, someone that has had a pet with cancer.

Your relationship with your pet is special, and you are responsible for its care and welfare. Consider not only what is best for your pet, but also what is best for you and your family. Quality of life is important for pets and people alike.

For Curley, we decided not go with Chemo we just couldn’t see putting more harmful chemicals into his body for his immune system to fight off. Instead we opted to boost his immune system not kill it further. He is on supplements that are helping a lot and he is on a healthy pet food. Since starting boosting his immune system we have seen a difference in the tumors in his neck. Does that mean we won the battle? No we are just beginning the war.

What we are having the most trouble with is with him keeping food down.  We started adding a lot of protein to his diet such as beef and chicken. His appetite is good and he wants to eat (which is a good thing). His problem is that he gobbles it up so fast that it comes right back up. So I have to hand feed him to keep things down and then let him finish his dry food and then give him his special supplements.

One of the most important nutritional requirements for dogs and cats with Cancer beside water is that they need to get adequate amounts of food and all other required nutrients. For more information on nutritional requirements for pets with cancer Visit OncoLink

This is a work in progress and we are learning new stuff everyday and keeping our fingers cross that we are doing the right thing for Curley. I know there are people that think we should do the chemo route but even if I was diagnosed with cancer, chemo would not be a choice for me either.

To You and Your Pets Health,

Alice
