Halloween Costumes for Pets

Should you dress your pets in Halloween Costumes? Do you think it is a good or bad idea?

Everyone has their opinion on this not that I am a big lover of dressing pets in costumes. That are lots of events that sponsor Halloween contest and make money for animal shelters and rescue groups which is a good thing.

Of course dressing up your dog or cat in a pet costume is a matter of choice. There are many types of costumes to choose from the new 2009 Zelda cave dog costume seems to be the rage, Pugs and Bull dogs really look cute in them.

Lets face we all have one time or the other put some type of clothing on our pets and had a good laugh at their expense.  Even those who have said they would never put costumes on their dog or cat. But you know what there are people that put outfits on their pets everyday and to those I say…What’s up with that…lol

An occasional outfit or costume now and then is one thing but everyday I think is a little over board. Of course that is just my opinion.

So if you are one that dresses up your pet in Halloween costumes, other occasions or even everyday my hat off to you.  Have you start looking for costumes for your kids or maybe even adult costumes for yourself. If so you might want to think about your pets, after all your pet  likes to have fun and be apart of the family too! Time is running out!

As of today September 2, 2009 there are only 58 days left to get your costume and don’t forget one for your pet too!

468x60 Costumes under $30

During the month of October there are many fall festivals that have  pet parades and pet costume contests. Who knows your pet might even win first pirze! Check with your local animal shelters, rescue groups, veterinary clinics and other pet related establishments in your area for Halloween events.

No Bones About It Your Pets Need Calcium

We all know that calcium is essential for our bones and how eating healthy nutritious food that provides it or taking supplements can help.

Here are some fun facts about bones and you can see by the number of bones each has. You will understand why it is important that your pet has a good source of calcium, whether it is from a good pet food or pet supplements.

  • We (humans) have 206 bones
  • Cats have 244 bones
  • and believe it or not dogs have 319

You wouldn’t think that dogs and cats being smaller than us would have so many bones but they do.

Do you kow you can make your own calcium? Save your egg shells. Wash and dry a dozen empty eggshells and bake at 300 degrees for 10 minutes. Grind into a powder using a mortar or coffee grinder. Mix 1/4 tsp into your dog or cats’ food several time a week.

(Note if you are using organic eggs there is no need to bake them.)

Ring Worm and your Cat

Ringworm is a typical skin disease that affects many cats. This medical condition is actually not caused by worms at all, but rather by a fungus. The sores on the skin due to ringworm fungi are circular, which led to the belief at once time that a curling worm under the skin caused this disease. However, there are no worms involved

There are four species of fungi that cause ringworm in a cat, and because some of these organisms are so well adapted to a cat’s body, about 20% of cats have ringworm and show no outward signs of the disease.

If your cat has ringworm, there are a lot of ways to treat it your can read more about this on an article I wrote How To Treat Ringworm On Your Cat And What To Look For

Practical Tips For Training Your Cat

Cats are often underestimated when it comes to the training process, simply because the average owner has very little need to attempt any sort of training at all. Unlike with dogs (whose ability to learn is very well documented) there’s no need to train cats in the basics of pet protocol like house training and bathing.

Consequently, relatively few people are aware of their cat’s abilities in this area. Training your cat is a fantastic way to enrich your cat’s life.

banner Practical Tips For Training Your Cat

- It builds a strong rapport between you and your cat

- Because training underlines your authority (your cat has to do what you want to get what he wants), it helps to curb dominant behavior

- It keeps your cat’s mind active and stimulated

- It’s great interactive play, and teaches good social skills

- Anxious and highly-strung cats are reassured and soothed by the repetition and routine of training

Practical tips for training your cat

- Remember to be patient. Your cat is an individual, with his own abilities and preferences. He will pick up some tricks quickly, but may struggle with others. Make allowances for his personality, and don’t lose your temper if it doesn’t go exactly according to schedule.

- Train smart. If you’re using food treats (which is highly recommended to achieve the desired results) then schedule training sessions for just before mealtimes: your cat’s natural desire for food at his regular mealtime will sharpen his focus and increase his desire to obey you (so he can get a treat.)

- Take baby steps. When training your cat, it’s best to build up a solid foundation of the basics before attempting to expand his repertoire.

- Cats have pretty short attention spans, and low boredom thresholds. Keep lessons short and interesting – and always try to end on a positive note.

For step-by-step advice on how to train your cat in a huge variety of other obedience commands and tricks (from ‘stay’ to ‘play dead’ to ‘fetch’), check out the Complete Cat Training book – it’s full of training how-to’s, as well as a huge amount of detailed information on solving problem behaviors, cat psychology, and how to develop a more rewarding relationship with your cat.

I don’t really understand how this woman can be making any money off her product, because she seems to be giving away a lot of stuff for free (but hey, I’m not complaining!)

Here are just a few of the handy little freebies that you get with this book:

- Two free bonus books: “The Essential Cat Recipe Book”, which shows you how to prepare tasty, healthy meals and treats for your beloved kitty; and “The Ultimate Guide to Pampering Your Cat”, which shows you how to develop a real bond of affection with your cat through improving his quality of life.

 - A free, private email consultation (worth $120) with a team of real live cat trainers. Any problems that you have, any queries whatsoever, and all you have to do is send an email – you’ll get a detailed, personal reply from a team of seasoned cat trainers, to make sure any problems are truly resolved to your satisfaction. Not bad.

Highly recommended. You really can’t go wrong here; not only is the whole thing jam-packed with practical advice and hands-on tips, but the price is extremely reasonable you get the book, the consultation, and the bonus books … oh yeah, and there’s a no-questions-asked money-back guarantee for 60 whole days after making the purchase.

Cats Are Affected By Food Allergies Too

Your Cat and Food Allergies

Having a pet cat has its rewards and you get to have a companion when you’re all alone in your house. Did you know that even if your feline is just 5 months old, it can already have a food allergy? However, most the time cats exhibit symptoms of an allergy between 2 to 6 years old. Those cats that have food allergies have contact allergies or concurrent inhalant.

The most common types of food that cause an allergic reaction in cats are dairy products, beef, and fish. Which you will find those ingredient in their foods. The correlation is not considered a coincidence. There are proteins that are more antigenic than other proteins. The food proteins are usually similar and the incidence of allergic responses can be associated with exposure.

Cat owners may confuse a food allergy from food intolerance. The food allergy in which symptoms of skin problems and itching are associated with cat allergies. Food intolerance is a result of diarrhea or vomiting and doesn’t create an allergic response. The one thing that is common among the two is that both conditions can be removed with a carefully planned diet that is free from allergy agents.

Itchy skin is the major symptom if your cat has a food allergy. Your cat may also have excessive scratching, miliary dermatitis, and hair loss. Base your evaluation from physical signs, then you can’t distinguish if your cat has food allergy, or if your cat has Atopy (affecting parts of the body not in direct contact with the allergen) It may involve eczema (atopic dermatitis), allergic conjunctivitis, allergic rhinitis and asthma.

Your cat’s other health problems must be identified and treated prior to obtaining a food allergy diagnosis. This includes Atopy, parasite hypersensitivities, allergies with flea bites, bacterial or yeast infections, seborrhea, and other problems. If all those problems are resolved and your cat still exhibits symptoms, then you should start with a food trial.

Your cat’s food trial should consist of new food and carbohydrate that will last for about 12 weeks. . Don’t give your cats treats during the trial period. Just make sure that it is still a well-balanced diet so that your cat won’t get sick.

If you detect elimination or decline of the symptoms, then you should do provocative testing, which means that you give the original food back. This is necessary to prove or confirm your diagnosis. If the symptoms go back after eating the original food, then your diagnosis is confirmed. Your cat truly has food allergy.

After you have confirmation, you have two choices. You can either feed your cat a homemade diet or a commercial diet. You can challenge your cat with other ingredients that doesn’t cause allergic reactions. Make sure that you give the right amount of food ingredients. The second option requires you to purchase a safe and healthy cat food

Whatever you choose, it’s for your cat’s well-being.

Keep Your Pet Healthy And Wise

One of the greatest pleasures in keeping pets comes from giving them personal care. There is hardly any dog or cat so dull that it does not learn to recognize the one who feeds and cares for it, and therefore comes to love this person for all of its comforts and necessities.

Gentleness and kindness are the two means at your command for gaining the love and confidence of your pets; and there is no happiness quite so heart-satisfying, as that which comes from feeling that some little dependent creature looks up to you with faith that you are the most beneficent being in the whole world.

Give your pet healthy safe food; keep their beds clean, and always provide plenty of fresh water. Do by your pets as you yourself would be done by, for the Golden Rule works quite as well with pets as with people.

The dog always recognizes a friend. He is very sensitive, and harsh treatment will never teach him obedience. He is intelligent, and with patience may be controhed by the tone of voice. When he does wrong, he should be corrected at the time, but he should never be struck over the ears, mouth or abdomen.

An obedient dog is far happier than one that disobeys. Develop his intelligence, and teach him to do useful things, as well as to play.
