Pain Relief From Arthritis for Dog and Cats

Is your dog or cat suffering from painful arthritis in their joints? Your pet might be suffering and you may not even know it because animals naturally tend to hide their pain. This is their way they protect themselves from their predators.

Do you know if your do or cat is in pain or distress? Here are some clues to help understand your pets body language.

When a dog or cat is in pain it can affect your pets weight and their eating habits. Excess weight gain can increase the chance of them tearing ligaments and damaging their joints. Arthritis and muscle soreness may actually cause dog and cats to gain weight due to the lack of getting exercise because of their pain. Pain can also have the opposite affect and can cause them to lose weight because they loose their appetite’s.

The most common cause of pain in pets are osteoarthritis or joint disease. You may have noticed that your pet might be limping or he or she may be reluctant to go up or down stairs, exercise, or play. Weight and joint injuries can also go hand-in-hand so losing those unnecessary pounds will help overweight pets decrease pressure on sore joints and reduce pain.

If your dog or cat is suffering from Arthritis there is an all natural joint pain relief that you can try for free. Pet Bounce is a plant-based homeopathic blend and is designed to help alleviate the symptoms your pet may be experiencing safely and without side effects. (I am all for that.)

It comes in a oral formula which is good because it absorbs quiclky into the blood stream. Just a few drops and that’s it, with ingredients that homeopathic experts use to relieve joint pain, stiffness and swelling to help your pet get pain relief.

Help Crack Down on Puppy Mills

You can help; Puppy mills are inhumane commercial enterprises that breed dogs as often as possible without providing adequate veterinary care, food, water and socialization.

[...] Assemblyman Pedro Nava recently introduced a bill to crack down on puppy mills in California. Called the Responsible Breeder Act of 2009, the new legislation would prevent the inherent cruelty associated with mass breeding of dogs.

Act today to improve the treatment of dogs in California. »

Specifically, the bill would limit the number of intact — not spayed or neutered — dogs or cats a breeder can maintain to 50 animals, while creating exceptions for shelters, veterinary facilities and the like. The bill is patterned on laws that passed last year in Virginia and Louisiana.

Let’s help add California to this list of states that protect dogs in puppy mills and encourage responsible breeding practices. Contact legislators in California and ask them to support AB 241, the Responsible Breeder Act of 2009. »

Natural Home Remedy For Lyme Disease

It is getting close to that time of year when those nasty little ticks like us and our pets. Of course depending where you live they can be around all year.

Ticks love tall grass so mow and edge the yard well to eliminate this perfect breeding ground. You should checked at least once a week for ticks, fleas, or skin irritations that could lead to serious problems. If a tick is discovered, don’t twist it out with thumb and forefinger or the head will break off and stay under the skin to do further damage. You want to make sure you don’t squeeze the tick also. To remove it, use a pair of tweezers as close to the skin as possible. There are some really great “tick removers” on the market.

The Tick Key (TickKey) Tick Remover – Your Key to Reliable, Safe & Effective Tick Removal

In 2000, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) released a report called Poisons on Pets: Health Hazards from Flea and Tick Products The report also demonstrated a link between chemicals commonly used in flea and tick products and serious health problems.

Over the counter products can cause more harm than good…for instant; Bio Spot is one of several over-the-counter spot on (meaning squeezed on to a particular spot) anti-flea-and-tick products that consumers apply to cats and dogs between the shoulder blades and sometimes at the base of the tail. Pets and Pesticides Please don’t do this to your pets.

Symptoms associated with Lyme disease include:

  1. High fever
  2. Swollen lymph nodes
  3. Lameness
  4. Loss of appetite
  5. Inflamed joints
  6. Lethargy

Please don’t use any over the counter products on your pets, there are so many natural remdies that work so much better without couse harm to your pets and your family.

Dogs With Dog Food Allergy

Dog’s with a Food Allergy: Treating and Managing Your Dog’s Allergy

Food allergy is one of the most common diseases in today’s society. You have to consider that allergies can cause discomfort in your daily activities and you will not be able to do your daily activities properly. However, you have to consider that your dog too can experience food allergies.

You have to consider the fact your dog too can have food allergies. This is why you should also monitor your pet because allergies can cause severe discomfort in your dog and in severe cases, it can be life threatening. It is very important that you should be aware of the signs and symptoms of dog allergies as it can be hard to detect. You have to remember that your dog cannot talk and cannot tell you what they are feeling. So, it is important to remember that you should know how to detect dog allergies in order for you to manage it properly and know how to effectively treat them.

Dogs today eat a variety of processed foods and food allergy is the third most common causes of allergies in dog. As with the human allergy, the dog’s immune system also overreacts to a certain kind of food that will trigger their immune system to release histamines to fight of the invader. You have to consider that the so-called invader is usually harmless to dogs and the immune system overreacts to it and mistakes it as harmful.

If your dog is suffering from an allergy attack, you will see that they have itching in several parts of the body. They will experience itching in the face, foot, limb, belly and they will also experience recurrent ear infections. You will also see that they will not be as active as usual, will refuse to eat and will vomit.

One of the main causes of food allergies is staring at you in the face. The dog foods available today that can be brought from several pet stores contains junk ingredients that can cause allergic reaction to your dogs. The proteins found in beef, chicken, chicken eggs, wheat and dairy products are the most common causes of allergies in dogs. As you can see, the ingredients mentioned are also the most common ingredients found in dog food. It is important that you should try switching your dog’s diet in order to determine what kind of food that is causing the allergy. more…

Small Hypoallergenic Dogs

Taking care of any dog can be rewarding and fun. But there is a great deal of responsibility as well. Small dogs can require more attention from their owners, they cannot be left alone for more than a day, and they may have health problems as they age. Smaller dogs also do not require as much exercise as other breeds. Dog breeds such as the poodle, maltese, shiz tu, and bichon frise are considered small hypoallergenic dogs because they do not shed as much as other breeds and they produce less dander.

Small dog breeds want to spend a lot of time with their owners. This may mean being in the same room, sitting on your lap, or being next to your bed at night. Depending on your dog’s personality, you may need to adjust your schedule in order to spend more time at home with your dog. As your dog ages, it may need less attention, but as a rule, small dogs will demand a lot more of your time than larger breeds.

You will have to keep your dog occupied with toys and games so that it does not get bored. Some small dogs enjoy completing tasks and are considered ‘working dogs.’ If you notice that your dog seems lethargic or does not want to play with their toys anymore, you may need to buy them some new ones. Playing fetch everyday mimics a task which will keep your dog happy.

When you need to travel, you should board your dog so that it will not feel lonely. Dogs that are left alone for a few days will usually not eat their dog food in order to conserve it. They may become angry or nervous and destroy your home or they may make themselves sick with worry. If you do not want to board your dog, you should have someone pet sit or at least check in on the dog everyday.

Non-Hypoallergenic Dogs and Hypoallergenic Dogs

Differences between Non-Hypoallergenic Dogs and Hypoallergenic Dogs

Even though the differences between non-hypoallergenic dogs and hypoallergenic dogs may not be huge, they are enough to reduce the amount of allergy attacks that people have when they are around certain breeds of dog. For those who want to own a dog, not being able to be in the same room with one for long periods of time, can be frustrating. Buying a hypoallergenic dog may be the only way they can have a dog in their home. While they may still experience allergy attacks, these attacks will be less frequent.

Non-hypoallergenic dogs tend to shed a lot. Their fur can be loose and dense, which means that it may contain a lot of dander as well. Dander is a collection of skin cells, dust, and other particles found in the air. As the dog sheds, these particles float around in the air and cause people to have allergy attacks. These dogs may also have an undercoat, which is a thick coat that protects them from harsh temperatures. This undercoat is what causes the dog to shed frequently. It can also trap dander and other allergens.

Some non-hypoallergenic dog breeds may also salivate more often than other breeds, which can also cause a person’s allergies to increase. Saliva contains bacteria that people are oftentimes allergic to. While these dogs cannot control the amount of saliva they expel, people who are allergic to dogs have a difficult time when these dogs are present. People with dog allergies may also be allergic to dog urine as it too can contain certain kinds of bacteria.

Adverse Reactions From Rimadyl In You Pet

RIMADYL, This is the most NSAID recommended by Veterinarians, with a generic name of carprofen.

Rimadyl is indicated for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and for the control of postoperative pain associated with soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries in dogs.

There is growing evidence showing that the drug has serious side effects. Some dogs have died due to the unexpectedly rapid onset of side effects, and/or because the drug’s side effects were not recognized by the veterinarian or the pet parent.

Adverse reactions from Rimadyl may include:

• decreased appetite
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• dark or tarry stools
• increased water consumption
• increased urination
• pale gums due to anemia
• yellowing of gums, skin or white of the eye due to jaundice
• lethargy
• incoordination
• seizures
• behavioral changes

Serious Adverse Reactions associated with this pet medicine class can occur without warning.

China Wants Pet Food Regulations

This is due to the recent deaths of more than 300 dogs due to contaminated food. To me this is long over due.

Huang Ching-jung, secretary-general of the Animal Protection Association of the Republic of China, told a news conference that test results released by the National Taiwan University (NTU) animal hospital had confirmed an earlier report by the Council of Agriculture (COA) that 200 dogs in a dog shelter in Bali, Taipei County, died last week after eating aflatoxin-contaminated food.

Aflatoxin, which is produced by mold, usually causes liver damage. Another 100 dogs at the Sanjhih stray dog shelter in Taipei County also died around the same time.

Huang said the association has asked other private institutes to conduct tests and found that the content of the food could reach as high as 630 parts per billion (ppb), noting that if the content is over 60 ppb, it will pose health risks to dogs.

The government should draft a rule to regulate the pet food industry, Huang said, noting that tests on aflatoxin, melamine and pesticide should be part of the regulation.

Here is the rest of the story: http://www.etaiwannews.com/etn/news_content.php?id=832899&lang=eng_news

They need to test everything not only what they use but what they ship out also including human and pet products…What do you think?

On January 14 2009 Reuters reported that the Chinese food and drug makers are also struggling from a declining economy. One official is concerned manufacturers could be tempted to cut corners and ignore quality standards and is telling the world, things could get worse. So what else is new here is the rest of the story. http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSPEK346481

With this news the FDA should be watching China’s imports very carefully…don’t you think?

Remember the China Infant Milk that was tainted with melamine? The former chairwoman was sentenced to life in prison and three others received death sentences. Read the story here. http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/01/22/china.tainted.milk/index.html?eref=edition

The other Chinese that were involved in the tainted pet food that had melamine received the same treatment. In my opinion we should do the same to the people here that uses ingredients that they know will harm us or our pets whether it is in our food or the drugs they push.

Chinese Imports are used in almost 900 different cat foods, dog foods, and pet treats. How scary is that?

Labrador Retrievers Basset Hounds Equals Bassadors

At least that is what I call my little mix breed and the love of my life.

So you take a Labrador and a Basset Hound..

Now we didn’t breed these dogs together and they are not my Moedawgs parents. We were looking for a yellow Lab. So I called my friend that worked at our local animal shelter. I told her what I was looking for and she said she did have a little yellow Lab puppy with short little legs and then laughed.

I went down to the shelter and fell in love with that little fur ball. As he was growing it wasn’t hard to figure out where the short legs came into the picture. Thankfully he didn’t get the long ears…not that there is anything wrong with long ears. He did get the longer back though which has caused him problems. You can see what happen here when he had his back operated on.

He turn out looking like a Yellow Lab with short legs…

So now you have met my Bassador. Later I will introduce you to my other two rescued dogs. Curley and Hunter.

Labrador Retrievers and Poodles Equals Labradoodles

A Labradoodle is a crossbred or hybrid dog created by crossing the Labrador Retriever and the Standard or Miniature Poodle.

The Labradoodle was first deliberately bred in 1989, when Australian breeder Wally Conron first crossed the Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle for Guide Dogs. His aim was to combine the low-shedding coat of the Poodle with the gentleness and trainability of the Labrador, and to provide a Guide Dog suitable for people with allergies to fur and dander. Labradoodles are now often used as Guide, Assistance, and Therapy Dogs.

While many Labradoodles display desired traits, their appearance and behavioral characteristics remain, from an overall breed standpoint, unpredictable.

Labradoodles’ hair can be anywhere from wiry to soft, and may be straight, wavy, or curly. Some Labradoodles do shed, although the coat usually sheds less and has less dog odor than that of a Labrador Retriever. The color range includes white, cream, gold, apricot, red, brown and black, and most of the other colors seen in Poodles.

Like most Labrador Retrievers and Poodles, Labradoodles are generally friendly, energetic and good with families and children (although as with any dog the temperament may vary between individuals). Labradoodles also often display an affinity for water and the strong swimming ability present in both their parent breeds.

Like their parent breeds, both of which are amongst the world’s most intelligent dog breeds, Labradooodles are very intelligent and quite trainable. Labradoodles can be taught to obey verbal or sign language commands, or both, and remain commonly used as guide dogs for disabled or handicapped persons around the world

Although most Labradoodles are healthy, they can suffer from certain problems common to their parent breeds. Both Poodles and Labrador Retrievers can suffer from hip dysplasia, and dogs should have specialist x rays to check for this problem before breeding. The parent breeds can also suffer from a number of eye disorders, and a CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) exam should also be performed.

Over the past couple of years, a number of Multi-generational Labradoodles have also been found to suffer from PRA (progressive retinal atrophy, an inherited disease that causes blindness) which occurs in both Miniature Poodles and Cocker Spaniels. It is strongly recommended that Multi-generational Labradoodles be DNA tested for PRA before being bred.

Notable Labradoodle owners;

Golfer Tiger Woods has two Labradoodles named Yogi and Riley.

2008 Vice President Elect Joe Biden owns a Labradoodle named Brother.

Actress Jennifer Aniston also owns a Labradoodle, bought for her by former husband, Brad Pitt.

Model Christie Brinkley owns a Labradoodle named Maple Sugar

Actress Barbara Eden has a Labradoodle named Djinn Djinn
