PetSmart has taken Dentley’s Beef Hooves off their shelves.

However The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is issuing this health alert to warn consumers not to use Pig Ears and Beef Hooves pet treats manufactured by Pet Carousel because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The products were distributed nationwide in both bulk and retail packaging for sale in pet food and retail chain stores. Pet Carousel is based in Sanger, Calif.

The affected pig ear products were packaged under the brand names Doggie Delight and Pet Carousel. The affected beef hooves were packaged under the brand names Choo Hooves, Dentley’s, Doggie Delight, and Pet Carousel. All sizes and all lots of these products made by Pet Carousel are included in this alert.

During September 2009, the FDA conducted routine testing of pig ears made by Pet Carousel. The test results detected a positive reading for Salmonella. This prompted an FDA inspection of Pet Carousel’s manufacturing facilities. During the inspection, the agency collected additional pet treat samples. Further analysis found Salmonella present in beef hooves, pig ears and in the manufacturing environment.

Nutro Recalls Dry Cat Food Products

Nutro Products Announces Voluntary Recall of Limited Range of Dry Cat Food Products

Contact:
Monica Barrett
Nutro Products, Inc.

monica.barrett@effem.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Franklin, Tennessee (May 21, 2009) — Today, Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods with “Best If Used By Dates” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries.  This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.

Two mineral premixes were affected.  One premix contained excessive levels of zinc and under-supplemented potassium. The second premix under-supplemented potassium.  Both zinc and potassium are essential nutrients for cats and are added as nutritional supplements to NUTRO® dry cat food.

This issue was identified during an audit of our documentation from the supplier.  An extensive review confirmed that only these two premixes were affected. This recall does not affect any NUTRO® dog food products, wet dog or cat food, or dog and cat treats.

Affected product was distributed to retail customers in all 50 states, as well as to customers in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Israel.  We are working with all of our distributors and retail customers, in both the US and internationally, to ensure that the recalled products are not on store shelves. These products should not be sold or distributed further.

Consumers who have purchased affected product should immediately discontinue feeding the product to their cats, and switch to another product with a balanced nutritional profile.  While we have received no consumer complaints related to this issue, cat owners should monitor their cat for symptoms, including a reduction in appetite or refusal of food, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea.  If your cat is experiencing health issues or is pregnant, please contact your veterinarian.

Consumers who have purchased product affected by this voluntary recall should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTRO® dry cat food product.  Cat owners who have questions about the recall should call 1-800-833-5330 between the hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST, or visit www.nutroproducts.com.

Conflict Of Interest -AVIMA Partners with Hill’s Pet Nutrition

Another Conflict Of Interest

In my opinion the AVIMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) is no different than the FDA. Of course pet obesity is becoming a problem and it can have major effects on your pet. But they are blatantly endorsing Hill’s Pet Nutrition (Science Diet).

The AVIMA should not be partners with any pet food company, but there you go the all mighty dollar gets in the way of what will be better for our pets health.

Don’t forget about the “Pet Food Recall” there were quite a few of Hill’s products recalled. Did your Vet tell you that, mine didn’t they had every other product listed but not any of their’s…another conflict of interest. (Money)

The AVMA and Hill’s have produced a short public service announcement to raise awareness about pet obesity and hopefully get pet owners to start a dialogue with their veterinarian.

The public service announcement directs you to – www.petfit.com – you’ll find it is a website that solely endorses Science Diet pet foods, discounts other major pet food brands, and doesn’t even mention other high quality pet foods. Most of the products were affected by the recall that they are comparing their food with. (Click on the ‘Lifestyle Nutrition’ tab at the top of the page to see what I mean.

Look at the ingredients below almost every bag of food they sell has Corn, Gluten and Chicken By-Product Meal…not very good for your pet…I certainly would not feed this to my dogs.

Hill’s Science Diet Ingredients

Ground Whole Grain Corn, Soybean Mill Run (16% source of fiber), Chicken By-Product Meal, Powdered Cellulose, Corn Gluten Meal, Soybean Meal, Chicken Liver Flavor, Soybean Oil, Dicalcium Phosphate, Dried Chicken Cartilage,

Prescription Diet Ingredients

Ground Whole Grain Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Chicken By-Product Meal, Powdered Cellulose, Soybean Meal, Soybean Mill Run, Chicken Liver Flavor

If your pet is getting heavy cut back on the quantity of food they are getting…stop the treats or give healthier ones most of all don’t fall for every commercial you see on TV about pet food.

It is irresponsible of the AVMA to partner with any individual pet food manufacturer. It gives those that believe they have their pets interest at heart, if they really want to help our pets they should make sure their food doesn’t have undesireable ingredients it in before they endorse it.

Pet Treats With Peanut Butter Now Being Recalled

Here we go folks. Like I said in a previous post I would be at all surprise if the peanut butter recall start to affect pet food and pet treats as well.

Should you be feeding your pet a peanut butter treat?  I would lay off anything made with peanut butter for humans or pets. After this is all over I would still be cautious and make sure I check things out.

Want To Make A Difference In Your Pets Life

DID YOU KNOW… The maximum life span of our dogs and cats is estimated to be about 25 to 30 years and yet the average pet lives only 13 to 14 years?

The problem with contaminated pet food still continues we just don’t hear about it in the news for some reason until it is too late for some pets. (money)

We are losing our pets due to tainted or harmful pet food ingredients

Massive recalls for well known brands of dog and cat foods.

March 2007, our nation experienced the single largest recall of pet food

More than 100 brands of pet foods were pulled off the shelves due to tainted ingredients.
Americans are constantly being misled by clever marketing tactics regarding which food is best for their pet. The unsuitable and harmful ingredients that are used, how long it is stored before it is ever placed on shelves for sale.

It’s time to stop trusting the your pet to anyone who makes a pet food.

Dog Treats Recalled By Hartz Mountain

The Hartz Mountain Corporation has voluntarily recalled a specific lot of its Hartz chicken-basted rawhide chips for dogs due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot are potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

The company announced the recall Friday, saying the two-pound plastic bags of chips with lot code JC23282, UPC number 3270096463 were distributed to a national retail customer it did not identify.

Hartz said the normal testing it conducts through an independent outside laboratory did not detect the presence of Salmonella in any of its rawhide products, but sample testing conducted by another laboratory did indicate the presence of the bacteria in a single bag of the chicken-basted rawhide chips.

The rest of the story;

Beware of rawhide and pig ears:

Some veterinarians warn against feeding rawhide and pig ears because they can contain chemical residues (from chemicals used to remove the fur) that can be harmful to your dog’s health. Also, larger pieces can break off and be swallowed, getting stuck in the intestines and causing blockages. When the rawhide gets wet from the stomach juices, it swells to twice its normal size causing serious stomach blockage. Soft and slick rawhide can also become a choking hazard.

Do you know the majority of treats on the market today depend solely upon clever packaging and advertising campaigns to attract consumers’ attention, diverting it from the actual ingredients. Many treats contain leftover cereals and other ingredients that are good for profits, rather than the health of your dog. Often, artificial coloring and chemical preservatives are included to maintain freshness, as these mass-produced treats typically spend months stored in warehouses before finally being stocked in your local grocery. And many treats contain wheat flour, soy flour, dextrose, BHA, propylene Glycol, high fructose corn syrup, and garlic. These products are known to be hard to digest and some can have potentially harmful effects.

To You and Your Pets Health,

Alice

There’s no reason dog treats can’t be nutritious and tasty!

Think All Pet Food Is The Same? – Think Again

It’s extremely unfortunate that pet food corporations still include ingredients that are inferior like corn, wheat and corn gluten, substances that are used to boost the protein value of lower quality foods, adding by-products, chemical preservatives, sugars, or artificial flavors and colors.

Recent studies have shown processed foods to be a factor in increasing numbers of pets suffering from cancer, arthritis, obesity, dental disease, heart disease. So pets many have allergies like sneezing, coughing or scratching all the time, and ear infections. The answer could probably be in their food dish and over use of vaccines, but that’s another subject.

One unknown chemical (Melamine) brought attention to our pets food. The sad part is people are still feeding their pet the same unhealthy food they were before all the recalls happen. Clever marketing tactics with new and improve packaging when in most cases that is the only thing that was actually changed. Even before if people would have read the labels they would have seen that know matter if the food was for a puppy or adult dog the ingredients were exactly the same. Just a different wrapper.

Many of the brands involved in the recall are national brands produced at multiple facilities. For example, PEDIGREE® is manufactured in numerous facilities throughout the country, and Everson represents a very small portion of the manufacturing base – 2.7 percent of total PEDIGREE® production.

Mars Petcare was also having the same problem with their CA. plant. Makes you wonder about all their manufacturing facilities.

Mars Pet Care also makes Nutro pet food, which scores of consumer’s nationwide blame for the recent illnesses — and even deaths — of their dog and cats. I wonder if they are having the same contamination problems with that product as well. (No reports yet but stay tune.)

Mars Petcare Shutting Down The Pennsylvania Factory

Mars Petcare, the company that has recalled salmonella-tainted pet food twice since 2007, is shutting down the Pennsylvania factory that was responsible for the contamination.  According to a notice dated Sept. 18 that Mars Petcare sent to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, some of the Everson, PA plant’s 53 workers will lose their jobs as early as Nov. 12. All employees will be out by Dec. 19.

Brand names of affected products include some items under the names of Country Acres, Retriever, Doggy Bag, Members Mark, Natural, Ol’ Roy, Special Kitty, Paws & Claws, Pedigree, Wegman’s, Pet Pride, PMI Nutrition, and Red Flannel.

As a result of the contamination problems, production at the Everson plant, Mars Petcare has now decided to shut the factory for good. Read more here.

Don’t wait for Another Pet Food Recall. I say this because, I care about your pet and others as well. This is not a shameless attempt to capitalize on a tragedy, it is vital information that can save pets lives. It is not a matter of IF, it is a matter of WHEN there is another Pet Food Recall.

It’s time to stop trusting the well being of your pet to just anyone who makes a pet food?

We do not sell our foods in your local pet food store. The reason is that most foods become spoiled or tainted by unsafe distribution practices.  Most foods are kept in trucks or warehouses with no climate control for up to 8 months. Do you know that one bite of food that has been tainted by mold or other contaminants could kill your pet…just one bite. (This happen in 2005)

More pet food recalls are happening all the time people are not hearing about them in the news like they should be, the media seems to put them on the back burner till they get big like the one in 2007.

We’re a holistic pet food company that has chosen to direct ship our products to the public rather than through pet stores. We do this on purpose. The industry average for pet foods to sit around is about 6 months to a year. So we bypass pet food stores altogether and ship the freshest product in the industry right to people’s homes, no middleman warehousing so there is no concerns of proper storage and pest control.

Our products are all natural and all human quality. All the products are manufactured in a USDA facility, with USA ingredients.

Are you ready to give your ”best friend” safe healthy pet food? One that has NEVER been recalled.

Another Pet Food Recall – Wake Up Pet Parents

How many recalls is it going to take to wake people up? You would think by now that they would be checking every label on their pets food for harmful ingredients and finding out how it is manufactured. Or at least be aware of what should and shouldn’t be in pet food.

What really gets me the most is even when you tell them what is really in the food they say “my pet isn’t having any problems with it he/she has been on this “brand” for years and doing real well. They just don’t get it, a dog or cats outward appearance may indicate overall wellness, while in fact they may be in seriously poor condition.

I always tell people don’t wait for another Pet Food Recall before they look for a safe and healthier pet food. It is not a matter of IF, it is a matter of WHEN and hopefully not like the magnitude as in 2007.

After the fact is too late to do something, you need to take action before your pets health goes downhill. Don’t wait till it is too late to switch pet food. During that last pet food recall there were so many desperate people looking for a healthier food because their pet had developed kidney failure, liver problems. It was too late!

Who’s Looking Out For Your Pet’s Health?

Last year the Pet Food Recall had many people outraged. With the growing awareness of what is actually in pet foods, people are looking for a safe alternative. Millions of pet owners need to hear the truth about pet foods.

It’s extremely unfortunate that pet food corporations still include ingredients that are inferior like corn, wheat and corn gluten, substances that are used to boost the protein value of lower quality foods, adding by-products, chemical preservatives, sugars, or artificial flavors and colors.

Have you ever wondered why so many of our pets are dying of cancer, thyroid problems, kidney and liver disease? And why so many have allergies like sneezing, coughing or scratching all the time, an ear infections that won’t go away.

The answer could probably be in their food dish and over use of vaccines, but that’s another subject.
