No Bones About It Your Pets Need Calcium

We all know that calcium is essential for our bones and how eating healthy nutritious food that provides it or taking supplements can help.

Here are some fun facts about bones and you can see by the number of bones each has. You will understand why it is important that your pet has a good source of calcium, whether it is from a good pet food or pet supplements.

  • We (humans) have 206 bones
  • Cats have 244 bones
  • and believe it or not dogs have 319

You wouldn’t think that dogs and cats being smaller than us would have so many bones but they do.

Do you kow you can make your own calcium? Save your egg shells. Wash and dry a dozen empty eggshells and bake at 300 degrees for 10 minutes. Grind into a powder using a mortar or coffee grinder. Mix 1/4 tsp into your dog or cats’ food several time a week.

(Note if you are using organic eggs there is no need to bake them.)

Pet Food Shipment Stopped and Other Pet Food Problems

Emergency Permit issued to Evanger’s Dog & Cat Food Co., Inc. by The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today it was suspending their Emergency Permit temporary.

Evanger’s, operating in Wheeling, Illinois, deviated from the prescribed process, equipment, product shipment, and record keeping requirements in the production of the company’s thermally processed low acid canned food (LACF) products.  The deviations in their processes and documentation could result in under-processed pet foods, which can allow the survival and growth of Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum), a bacterium that causes botulism in some animals as well as in humans.

Two Nature’s Variety freeze dried pet food products have been withdrawn from distribution.

Nature’s Variety recently identified two lots of Freeze Dried product that didn’t meet our quality standards. These products do not represent a health hazard to your pet.  We have voluntarily withdrawn distribution of these specific products:

* Freeze Dried Raw Chicken Formula (UPC # 69949 60151) with a “best if used by” date of 05/25/10
* Freeze Dried Raw Beef Formula (UPC # 69949 60251) with a “best if used by” date of 05/25/10

Our distributor and retailer partners have kept control of these products, and because we retrieved these products so quickly, it is very unlikely that you purchased this batch of food. If, however, you believe you may have purchased one of these products, you may contact Nature’s Variety at 1.888.519.PETS (7387) for a full refund or replacement.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact us by clicking CONTACT US at the top of this page, or call our Customer Service Team directly at 1.888.519.PETS. We will be happy to respond to you as quickly as possible.

More info can be found on the Nature’s Variety website. You’ll also find information at Pet Food Express, which has decided to suspend sales of some other Nature’s Variety pet foods.

Just a reminder about Nutro Products in case you missed it.

Franklin, Tennessee (May 21, 2009) — Today, Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods with “Best If Used By Dates” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.

For your pets sake you need to know what is really in their food and where it comes from and what kind of conditions it is manufactured in.

Help Save A Life by recommending Safe Pet Food!

Special Request to Every Pet Owner, Your Help is Needed

Our pets need your help to change the way pet food companies label their products.

We need to give the FDA a little push into doing what is right when it comes to our pets, they have drag their heels way to long. Even though they have formed a ‘FDA Transparency Task Force.’  I don’t think they are going to bite the hand that feeds them if you get my drift.

What this would do or should do would hopefully make the Pet Food Manufactures show on their labels if any of their pet food contains or could contain ingredients derived from 4-D animals (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter), should be required to warn the consumer.

Do we really think the “big pet food companies” would let that happen? RIGHT! It should be that way and our pets need your help to make it happen.

Susan Thixton of the Truth about PetFood is trying to get One Million or more signatures to send to the FDA to help make this happen for our pets lives. So please help by going to here ==> Pet Food Warning Labels and add your name for your pets life.

Tell everyone you know that owns a pet to do the same…Remember they need your help.

FDA Doesn’t Care About What Goes In Pet Food

This doesn’t come to a surprise to me, in my opinion they don’t care about us our pets or there would be a lot of changes made. Gee who do you think is running this country? Wall Street, the FDA and the good old Big Pharma guys is who I think has control over everything.

There has to be a way to get these guys under control or our lives and our pets lives will certainly suffer more in the days and years to come.

Anyway you have to read what Susan Thixton from the Truth about Pet Food Petsumer Report www.TruthaboutPetFood.com has to say.

And by the way I was one of those concerned pet owner which got the political jargon that was clear they had never read the letter sent to them.

[...]

Back in November 2008, many concerned pet owners across the United States stopped from their busy lives to write their Representatives in Congress regarding pet food; specifically explaining that the FDA allows the laws of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to be violated with pet food.  More than 50 different elected officials of Congress received a letter; each received the same letter, which carefully detailed the undeniable evidence.  Some of the elected Representatives didn’t even bother to respond to their constituent, however most responded with such political jargon it was clear they had never read the letter sent to them.  Out of over 50 Representatives in Congress, only one bothered to ask the FDA to respond.  Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia sent our letter to the FDA asking for a response.

[...]

Read the whole story here: FDA Tells Senator Robert Byrd They Don’t Care Pet Food Violates Federal Law

[...]

The FDA website states about Federal Law 402(a)(5):

“Pet food consisting of material from diseased animals or animals which have died otherwise than by slaughter, which is in violation of 402(a)(5) will not ordinarily be actionable, if it is not otherwise in violation of the law.  It will be considered fit for animal consumption.”

http://www.fda.gov/ora/compliance_ref/cpg/cpgvet/cpg690-300.html

[...]

So what this really means is that we as pet owners will have to be careful and read and know exactly is in our pets food because the one that should be looking out for them clearly doesn’t give an da##.

FDA Denies Investigation on Nutro Products – Surprise – NOT

Here we go again folks, they will wait til this reaches the epidemic stage just like the tainted pet food recall in 2007. Well, if they are not investigating, they should be. Why are all of these pets getting sick when they eat it?

The FDA is now saying there is no investigation of NUTRO underway, according to a story from WXYZ in Detroit,

(WXYZ) – There has been a lot of web buzz about an article posted on Consumer Affairs’ web site regarding the safety of Nutro Pet Food. Action News has talked with the Food and Drug Administration and they insist there is no “investigation” underway.

An FDA spokesperson says, “Normally, we do not confirm or deny the existence of an investigation. In this situation, though, it’s unfair to the company to leave the implication out there, so I want to state that there is NO INVESTIGATION currently underway into NUTRO products.”

Here’s the rest of FDA: ‘No Investigation into NUTRO Pet Food’

NUTRO Bites Back; Denies Probe of Pet Deaths, Illnesses can be found at Consumer Affairs.

“NUTRO Products Inc. denies it’s under investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) — even though an official of that agency told ConsumerAffairs.com on Monday that the pet food maker is the focus of a probe.”

Consumers Complained For Two Years About NUTRO Products

What a shame that so many pets have and still are becoming ill from eating Nutro Products. I wrote about Nutro having problems in April of 2008.

“Mars Pet Care also makes Nutro pet food, which scores of consumer’s nationwide blame for the recent illnesses — and even deaths — of their dog and cats. I wonder if they are having the same contamination problems with that product as well. (No reports yet but stay tune.)”

Consumeraffairs.com post this article;

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2008/04/pet_food_recalls93.html

You can read my post here:

Now a year later the FDA has finally confirm that they are looking in ot it. To me they should have warn about this a long time ago. Why do they always wait until the last minute to tell people that something might be wrong.

Pet owners have been complaining about Nutro for over two years; saying their cats and dogs have either become very ill (and survived) or died after eating the Nutro products. Finally, the word is that the FDA is investigating the pet food, an investigation could prove to be criminal or civil in nature.

          [...]

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed that the agency is investigating NUTRO pet food, following a series of unexplained illnesses and deaths. Consumers have been complaining for more than two years that their pets have become ill after eating NUTRO products; many have recovered when they were switched to other foods. The company has steadfastly denied that its food is to blame.

Until now, the FDA has been mum about whether it was actively investigating the company. Today, the FDA’s Division of Freedom of Information confirmed the agency has an ongoing investigation into NUTRO — and said that investigation could be criminal or civil in nature. The office did not elaborate on the nature or focus of that investigation.

[...]

ConsumerAffairs.com filed its Freedom of Information request for NUTRO records last year after we uncovered a worrisome trend among dogs and cats across the country. An analysis of our complaints revealed that scores of pets from California to South Carolina had experienced sudden and recurring bouts of diarrhea, vomiting, and other digestive problems.

The only common denominator among those dogs and cats was NUTRO pet food. In nearly every case, we also learned the pets’ conditions improved once their owners stopped feeding them NUTRO pet food.

ConsumerAffairs.com continues to receive complaints about NUTRO from dog and cat owners nationwide. In the past year, we’ve received nearly 500 complaints from pet owners who say their dogs or cats suddenly became ill after eat NUTRO. The problems these pets have experienced are similar: vomiting, diarrhea, and other digestive issues.

[...]

NUTRO defends its products and insists its food is safe. Many NUTRO customers also tout the food, saying their pets have had no problems. And veterinarians say several factors can cause gastrointestinal problems in dogs and cats, including changes in diet, newly developed sensitivities to pet foods, and viral infections.

But pet owners who contact us on a nearly daily basis are convinced something is wrong with NUTRO’s food. And they say it’s no coincidence that so many dogs and cats have become sick — with the same symptoms — after eating various flavors of that pet food.

See FDA Confirms Probe of NUTRO Pet Food Deaths, Illnesses from Consumer Affairs for more.

What is wrong with this picture.? How many of our pets have to become ill before the FDA steps in and does somthing about it? Why does it take them so long to let us know that the food we are feeding our pets could kill them?

What Happens Behind Closed Doors At A Rendering Facility

The Rendering Industry provides pet food manufacturers with many common ingredients; by-product meal, meat and bone meal, animal fat and animal digest are the most common, but the rendering industry also provides ingredients for soaps and children’s crayons. What goes on behind those closed doors?

Van Smith of the Baltimore City Paper in 1995 wrote this article, ‘What’s Cookin’?, shocked Baltimore and the world. Some of this is might be upsetting but needs to be shown because there are still a lot of people that needs to “see” proof and read about what is really going on and hopefully will do something about it…like getting their pets healthier food.. http://www.citypaper.com/about/vansmith.asp

A detailed report on the rendering industry provided to the Congressional Research Center in 2004. http://digital.library.unt.edu/govdocs/crs/permalink/meta-crs-9085:1

To continue reading on this Susan Thixton received an email from Jerry E. and from reading his brief email, of his personal experience with a rendering facility, she told him his story needed to be told, read about it here;

http://www.truthaboutpetfood.com/articles/290/2/Pet-Food-Ingredients-By-Product-Meal-Meat-and-Bone-Meal-Animal-Fatwhats-in-there/Page2.html

This is a quote from Susan and I totally agree with her “The following is Jerry’s story; a real life, first hand experience at one rendering plant that provided ingredients to pet food. If you continue to believe the pet food companies that use by-product meal, meat and bone meal, animal fat, and animal digest ingredients, read Jerry’s story. If you have a stubborn friend or relative that continues to feed their dog or cat a pet food that contains these inferior ingredients, forward them this real life story.”

After reading that if you would really want healthy food for your pets I strongly advise you to take a look here: Life’s Abundance.

Want To Make A Difference In Your Pets Life

DID YOU KNOW… The maximum life span of our dogs and cats is estimated to be about 25 to 30 years and yet the average pet lives only 13 to 14 years?

The problem with contaminated pet food still continues we just don’t hear about it in the news for some reason until it is too late for some pets. (money)

People are constantly being misled by clever marketing tactics regarding which food is best for their pet. The unsuitable and harmful ingredients that are used, how long it is stored before it is ever placed on shelves for sale.

It’s time to stop trusting the your pet to anyone who makes a pet food.

China Wants Pet Food Regulations

This is due to the recent deaths of more than 300 dogs due to contaminated food. To me this is long over due.

Huang Ching-jung, secretary-general of the Animal Protection Association of the Republic of China, told a news conference that test results released by the National Taiwan University (NTU) animal hospital had confirmed an earlier report by the Council of Agriculture (COA) that 200 dogs in a dog shelter in Bali, Taipei County, died last week after eating aflatoxin-contaminated food.

Aflatoxin, which is produced by mold, usually causes liver damage. Another 100 dogs at the Sanjhih stray dog shelter in Taipei County also died around the same time.

Huang said the association has asked other private institutes to conduct tests and found that the content of the food could reach as high as 630 parts per billion (ppb), noting that if the content is over 60 ppb, it will pose health risks to dogs.

The government should draft a rule to regulate the pet food industry, Huang said, noting that tests on aflatoxin, melamine and pesticide should be part of the regulation.

Here is the rest of the story: http://www.etaiwannews.com/etn/news_content.php?id=832899&lang=eng_news

They need to test everything not only what they use but what they ship out also including human and pet products…What do you think?

On January 14 2009 Reuters reported that the Chinese food and drug makers are also struggling from a declining economy. One official is concerned manufacturers could be tempted to cut corners and ignore quality standards and is telling the world, things could get worse. So what else is new here is the rest of the story. http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSPEK346481

With this news the FDA should be watching China’s imports very carefully…don’t you think?

Remember the China Infant Milk that was tainted with melamine? The former chairwoman was sentenced to life in prison and three others received death sentences. Read the story here. http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/01/22/china.tainted.milk/index.html?eref=edition

The other Chinese that were involved in the tainted pet food that had melamine received the same treatment. In my opinion we should do the same to the people here that uses ingredients that they know will harm us or our pets whether it is in our food or the drugs they push.

Chinese Imports are used in almost 900 different cat foods, dog foods, and pet treats. How scary is that?

Do Pet Food Companies Care About Your Pets

Do you think all pet food companies cares about your pets? Take a look at this let me warn you the picture is really gross this incident was with Beneful Dog Food a Purina product with maggots

Purina explanation, “As soon as our food leaves our factory, it is no longer our responsibility.” Then who responsibility for it? Most commercial pet food is made in bulk and stored in warehouses 6 to 18 months before it ever reaches the store shelf. So who would be held responsible the company who made it or the company who is selling it?

What if everything you purchased for your pet was made by a company that truly cared about every food or product they produced? Wouldn’t it be great to purchase items from a company that stood behind what they made, that cared about every distribution aspect and every ingredient? They are out there, and HealthyPetNet is one of them.

Without even knowing what food you currently use, I can tell you that Life’s Abundance is completely different.

First, All the products are manufactured in a USDA facility, with USA ingredients.

Second, they do not sell their foods in your local pet food stores. The reason is that most foods become spoiled or tainted by unsafe distribution practices. Most foods are kept in trucks or warehouses with no climate control for up to 8 months or longer. This is why they ship Fresh to your door.

Third, they never use less than human quality ingredients. Most pet foods still use ingredients that are unfit for human consumption. This helps keep their costs down, but it costs your pet their good health.

Fourth, they are constantly upgrading their foods with the latest in health technology. For example, they use Live Pro-Biotics to support intestinal health, Chelated Minerals for better absorption, Meats with no hormones or steroids, fresh fruits and vegetables, USDA manufacturing facilities, and more

Here are just a few of the procedures that they follow to provide pets with a safe and nutritious product.

All ingredients are individually inspected for human quality and carry the APHIS certification (a European standard for human quality ingredients)

Every vendor must supply an ‘assurance statement’ with each shipment. This statement must provide nutritional quality of ingredient provided AND must state it is free from any mold, bacteria, and so forth.

The ingredients are tested AGAIN before manufacturing to make sure the quality is as stated AND it meets their standards. The product is tested 3 times during the manufacturing process – to again to assure everything is ‘as it should be’.

The product is tested again after manufacturing and again when it arrives at the warehouse. One bag of food is kept at the warehouse – from each batch – to test in case a Customer has a problem or concern with the product. Each ‘one bag’ from each batch is kept for 6 months.

The products are shipped directly from the warehouse to the Customer – no middleman warehousing (concerns of proper storage and pest control).

The best thing is that they know who bought what and when, you are not just someone that walked into a store and bought a bag of food. If something should happen you would be notified directly by them asap not months down the road.

You won’t have to worry about that they have very high standards and have been in business for over 10 years and never had any product recalled. Now that’s saying something. Trilogy/HealthyPetNet

Vaccines, Cancer, Pet Food and Pet Supplements

Every year more and more Vets are asked to treat dogs and cats for cancer. The pets that are being brought to them for cancer treatment are much younger than ever before. There have been plenty of recent studies to confirm these findings, and it’s a fact.

Veterinarians are also seeing a lot more pets with allergies, a lot more skin and gum disease, arthritis, kidney problems… and especially auto-immune diseases – diseases in which a dog’s own immune system turns on them and begins attacking their healthy blood and skin.

Many of these deadly and painful diseases were almost non-existent 10 to 20 years ago. Why is this happening?

There are 3 MAJOR CAUSES..And some very important information that you can do to decrease the likelihood of Cancer affecting your dog or cat.

1. OVER-VACCINATION..vaccinate with as little and as infrequent as possible.

Discover The TRUTH about Pet Vaccines  the Side Effects Of Vaccines and the Alternatives To Vaccines

Find out What you SHOULD give to your dog or cat – and what to AVOID

MOST Veterinarians are STILL giving multivalent vaccines EVERY year- in spite of research documenting the HARMFUL effects of these vaccines. (They get paid a commission for every shot they give.)

2. ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS..Avoid what you can, such as;

Harmful flea and tick treatments, learn the natural options to use instead.

Heartworm Preventatives: there alternatives to regular preventatives. and so much more…

3. POOR QUALITY FOOD…ONLY feed quality food..NOT only Kibble. Supplement your dog or cat.

The most important thing that you can do for your dog and cat to keep them healthy and PREVENT disease is to feed quality dog food and quality cat food.

Ones without any of the following;

  • Chemical Preservatives – BHA, Ethoxyquin
  • By – Products – beaks, feet, feathers, heads
  • Corn, Wheat, or Soy – known allergens
  • Artificial Coloring
  • Flavor Beef fat – Indigestible fat
  • Sugars or Corn Syrup
  • Animal Digest -guts

It’s time to stop trusting the your pet to anyone who makes a pet food.

So let me say again Supplements for your dog or cat to give them a better life and feed quality dog food and quality cat food

Optima Dog Food Still In The News

A Shanghai pet food dealer has recalled the food with production dates between August and September 2008.

Some dogs eating “Optima Puppy Lamb and Rice Dry Dog Food” have been poisoned by aflatoxin – a naturally occurring toxic chemical that comes from a fungus found on corn and other grains. Here again people are playing Russian roulette with dog food a Chinese Blog owner stated that the aflatoxin contamination could have been caused from a shipment of pet food sitting in port in hot humid conditions this is  prime growing conditions for the aflatoxin mold. No confirmation or denial has been provided by Optima Pet Foods.

Optima Pet Food is manufactured by Doane Pet Products, based in Tennessee in the U.S. The Associated Press reports: “Doane’s U.S. operations were acquired in 2006 by Mars Inc., which makes Pedigree brand pet foods. It is not known if Doane was the manufacturer of the brand sold in China.

What Really Is In Pet Food. Do You Know

Pet Food is neither human-like nor human-grade What really is in pet food? Rendered, inedible waste from the human food chain.

A dog’s outward appearance may indicate overall wellness, while in fact the dog may be in seriously poor condition. Over time, your pet may experience changes in demeanor and behavior that leaves his owner  to wonder what is going on. The answer can often be found in the food dish. Sloppy habits and cheap foods can only hurt your pet, so a healthy routine revolving around his food dish is necessary to keep him in peak condition, both inside and out.

When feeding your dog dry kibble as his basic food. Most dry dog foods are soybean, corn or wheat  based. Some of the better brands (Life’s Abundance) have meat or fish meal as the first listed ingredient. Although higher priced, they are worth looking into. Dogs eat less of the higher quality products, thus reducing the cost.

Seems like they use what ever it takes no matter what the cost to your pets health. Who wants to hear “oops” we made a mistake, not me when it comes to my pets and I hope not you.

Many animals suffer from nutritional deficiencies which may result in disease. Have you ever wondered why so many of our pets are dying of cancer, thyroid problems, kidney and liver disease?

Why so many dog and cats have allergies like sneezing, coughing or scratching all the time, an ear infections that won’t go away. It is the food they are eating.

We’ve all heard about the recent Chinese pet food recalls, and the staggering numbers of pets that were severely affected by the ingredients contained in the food.

Most pet foods get spoiled and damaged by the fact that they are sold through stores. The industry average for pet foods to sit around us about 6 months to a year. Most pet foods are made from what’s been rejected for people.

  • Do you have a pet or know anyone who has a pet?
  • Do you know anyone who has a pet that doesn’t feed them?
  • Do you know anyone who has a pet that wants to feed them old, spoiled, Non human quality products…intentionally? Of course not!
  • Would you eat old, spoiled, non human quality food?
  • Why would your feed anything less to your pet?
  • Pet Owners are looking for a healthier safe pet food?
