However The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is issuing this health alert to warn consumers not to use Pig Ears and Beef Hooves pet treats manufactured by Pet Carousel because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The products were distributed nationwide in both bulk and retail packaging for sale in pet food and retail chain stores. Pet Carousel is based in Sanger, Calif.

The affected pig ear products were packaged under the brand names Doggie Delight and Pet Carousel. The affected beef hooves were packaged under the brand names Choo Hooves, Dentley’s, Doggie Delight, and Pet Carousel. All sizes and all lots of these products made by Pet Carousel are included in this alert.

During September 2009, the FDA conducted routine testing of pig ears made by Pet Carousel. The test results detected a positive reading for Salmonella. This prompted an FDA inspection of Pet Carousel’s manufacturing facilities. During the inspection, the agency collected additional pet treat samples. Further analysis found Salmonella present in beef hooves, pig ears and in the manufacturing environment.

Salmonella Is Taking A Toll On Peanut Butter Products.

Salmonella is taking a toll on peanut butter products. You just never know what is going to be recalled next. One would think with everything going on these companies would take more care in producing their products and testing everything that goes into their product before and after it is made. It would save them money and their companies reputation in the long run. Plus it wouldn’t put the stress on us when it comes to trying to figure out what is or not safe to eat. Or feed our pets also.

Below is some of the lastest recalls;

Nationwide Recall of Peanut Butter

I would tell my family and friends to stay away from eating peanut butter at this time. Especially not to be eating peanut butter at nursing homes, hospitals, schools and restaurants.

Due to the outbreak of salmonella which seems like it is coming from bulk containers distributed to institutions food service industries, and private label food companies. Health officials are urging nursing homes, hospitals, schools and restaurants to throw away containers of recalled peanut butter because of salmonella.

The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment. However, in some persons, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses. Dogswell Breathies Held Up In Customs For Salmonella

Dogswell is a company in Santa Monica California. They make treats for dogs such as Breathies, Happy Hips, Mellow Mut, Vitality and Happy Heart.

Seems like one of their products (Breathies) got held up by customs for Salmonella, guess the Manufacturer Country (China) At least these treats were stopped by the FDA before they were sold to pet owners. Kinda makes you wonder how many were not.  There are our treats listed on the OASIS report I haven’t a clue where they were headed.

This is from their FAQ page; http://www.dogswell.com/index.php?section=FAQ

Do you source any of your ingredients from any of the facilities that were named in the pet industry recalls in April 2007?

“Our material suppliers are certified clean and clear of any contaminants. We do NOT source any of our ingredients from Import-Pinyang Pet Product Co. or Shanghai Bestro, the two facilities involved in the most recent industry issues regarding melamine in chicken jerky sold at Wal-Mart. We do NOT source any of our ingredients from Binzhou Futian Biological Technology, the manufacturer of the contaminated rice protein concentrate, nor do we purchase any ingredients from Wilbur-Ellis.”

“Salmonella is one of the easiest contaminants to prevent.  Salmonella is killed after 23 seconds at 160 degrees. DOGSWELL® cooks all of our chicken jerky products at 160 degrees for ten hours.  While some manufacturers choose a quicker “flash cooking process” to irradiate their products, DOGSWELL® cooks all products much longer than the flash cooking process.”

Maybe they don’t source from the other companies in China but they did from this one; Yantai China Pet Foods Co. Ltd. and seems like the cook didn’t cook the products as long as they were suppose to…

MSNBC ran a report on the success of Dogswell/Catwell in November 2008, reading that made me sick. In my opinion this company is just concern about making money.

To quote Marco Giannini, Dogswell’s founder and president. “He says the opportunities to launch new products are endless — as long as you’re smart about it.”

“First, it’s imperative to create buzz. Giannini says he always introduces a new product about one to two months before the big trade shows to get people talking about it.”

“Speed is also of the essence. Giannini points out that Dogswell won’t launch a line that it knows will not be profitable within three years.”

I am not saying that the ingredients are not good I just worry about where they come from. Americans are constantly being misled by clever marketing tactics and to me this company knows all the tricks.

You can read the whole story here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27475955/from/ET/

It’s frightening to think about losing our pets due to tainted or harmful pet foods and for me I wouldn’t feed my pets any product that has any connection to China at all no matter what. Did you know that most pet foods bought in the store have been sitting around for as long as 18 months before you even buy it? How fresh can that be?

Mars Petcare Announces Extension of Pet Food Recall

Franklin, Tennessee (November 25, 2008) —Today, Mars Petcare US announced an extension of a previously announced voluntary recall of dry cat and dog food products manufactured at its Allentown, Pennsylvania facility with “Best By” dates between August 11, 2009 – October 3, 2009. The pet food is being voluntarily recalled because of potential contamination with Salmonella. This voluntary recall affects product sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club, ShopRite Supermarkets, and Wal-mart locations in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and potentially infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

This action is an extension of the voluntary recall issued on October 27, 2008 of all sizes of SPECIAL KITTY® Gourmet Blend dry cat food produced at the Allentown facility on August 11, 2008. We recently learned that an additional sample of SPECIAL KITTY® made on September 25, 2008 at the Allentown facility tested positive for Salmonella. There have been no reported cases of human or pet illness caused by Salmonella associated with products produced at this facility. Mars Petcare US is taking an additional precautionary action to protect pets and their owners by extending the October 27, 2008 voluntary recall to include all dry pet food product produced at the facility with “Best By” dates between August 11, 2009 and October 3, 2009.

Dog Treats Recalled By Hartz Mountain

The Hartz Mountain Corporation has voluntarily recalled a specific lot of its Hartz chicken-basted rawhide chips for dogs due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot are potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

The company announced the recall Friday, saying the two-pound plastic bags of chips with lot code JC23282, UPC number 3270096463 were distributed to a national retail customer it did not identify.

Hartz said the normal testing it conducts through an independent outside laboratory did not detect the presence of Salmonella in any of its rawhide products, but sample testing conducted by another laboratory did indicate the presence of the bacteria in a single bag of the chicken-basted rawhide chips.

The rest of the story;

Beware of rawhide and pig ears:

Some veterinarians warn against feeding rawhide and pig ears because they can contain chemical residues (from chemicals used to remove the fur) that can be harmful to your dog’s health. Also, larger pieces can break off and be swallowed, getting stuck in the intestines and causing blockages. When the rawhide gets wet from the stomach juices, it swells to twice its normal size causing serious stomach blockage. Soft and slick rawhide can also become a choking hazard.

Do you know the majority of treats on the market today depend solely upon clever packaging and advertising campaigns to attract consumers’ attention, diverting it from the actual ingredients. Many treats contain leftover cereals and other ingredients that are good for profits, rather than the health of your dog. Often, artificial coloring and chemical preservatives are included to maintain freshness, as these mass-produced treats typically spend months stored in warehouses before finally being stocked in your local grocery. And many treats contain wheat flour, soy flour, dextrose, BHA, propylene Glycol, high fructose corn syrup, and garlic. These products are known to be hard to digest and some can have potentially harmful effects.

To You and Your Pets Health,

Alice

There’s no reason dog treats can’t be nutritious and tasty!

Mars Petcare Shutting Down The Pennsylvania Factory

Mars Petcare, the company that has recalled salmonella-tainted pet food twice since 2007, is shutting down the Pennsylvania factory that was responsible for the contamination.  According to a notice dated Sept. 18 that Mars Petcare sent to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, some of the Everson, PA plant’s 53 workers will lose their jobs as early as Nov. 12. All employees will be out by Dec. 19.

Brand names of affected products include some items under the names of Country Acres, Retriever, Doggy Bag, Members Mark, Natural, Ol’ Roy, Special Kitty, Paws & Claws, Pedigree, Wegman’s, Pet Pride, PMI Nutrition, and Red Flannel.

As a result of the contamination problems, production at the Everson plant, Mars Petcare has now decided to shut the factory for good. Read more here.

Don’t wait for Another Pet Food Recall. I say this because, I care about your pet and others as well. This is not a shameless attempt to capitalize on a tragedy, it is vital information that can save pets lives. It is not a matter of IF, it is a matter of WHEN there is another Pet Food Recall.

It’s time to stop trusting the well being of your pet to just anyone who makes a pet food?

We do not sell our foods in your local pet food store. The reason is that most foods become spoiled or tainted by unsafe distribution practices.  Most foods are kept in trucks or warehouses with no climate control for up to 8 months. Do you know that one bite of food that has been tainted by mold or other contaminants could kill your pet…just one bite. (This happen in 2005)

More pet food recalls are happening all the time people are not hearing about them in the news like they should be, the media seems to put them on the back burner till they get big like the one in 2007.

We’re a holistic pet food company that has chosen to direct ship our products to the public rather than through pet stores. We do this on purpose. The industry average for pet foods to sit around is about 6 months to a year. So we bypass pet food stores altogether and ship the freshest product in the industry right to people’s homes, no middleman warehousing so there is no concerns of proper storage and pest control.

Our products are all natural and all human quality. All the products are manufactured in a USDA facility, with USA ingredients.

Are you ready to give your ”best friend” safe healthy pet food? One that has NEVER been recalled.

To You and Your Pets Health,

Alice
